Cfs Operations

The Hawaiian Islands

This scenery renders an area from N23/W170 to N15/W150 which is 1,104nm by 480nm, or approximately 530,000 square nm and includes the Hawaiian Island chain.

The Hawaiian Islands scenery is new-style Cfs scenery and uses the default textures which ship with Cfs.

Installation

This scenery requires approximately 3.28MB of disk space after installation.

First, if you have some other Hawaii scenery installed, you must remove it.

1. Create the following directories:

[Cfs Directory]\Scenery\Hawaii
[Cfs Directory]\Scenery\Hawaii\Scenery
[Cfs Directory]\Scenery\Hawaii\Texture

2. Place all .BGL files into the "Hawaii\Scenery" directory and all of the .BMP files into the "Hawaii\Texture" directory.

If you have a previous version of this scenery installed, you MUST delete all of the .BGL files from that earlier version before copying in the .BGL files from this new version.

3. Run Combat Flight Simulator and choose "Free Flight".

4. Choose "Scenery Library..." from the "World" menu.

5. On the first, "Scenery Library", dialog, select "Files...".

6. On the next, "Scenery Areas", dialog select "Add...".

7. On the "Add Scenery Area" dialog, enter the following information:

Scenery area path: =:\=\Scenery\Hawaii\Scenery\*.BGL
Scenery area title: Hawaiian Islands
Scenery area type: Regional
Scenery area active: Checked

8. After returning to "Free Flight", you may use the "World|Go To..." dialog and select one of the new fields from the "Airfields" list.

About The Scenery

The following islands appear in the scenery:

  • The Big Island
  • Maui
  • Kahoolawe
  • Lanai
  • Molokai
  • Oahu
  • Kauai
  • Niihau
  • Kaula

The Hawaiian Islands scenery is new-style Cfs scenery and uses the default textures which ship with Cfs.

The island of Oahu includes the following air fields:

  • Bellows
  • Ewa
  • Ford Island
  • Haliewa
  • Hickam
  • Kaneohe
  • Pearl City
  • Wheeler

These fields are placed APPROXIMATELY and are not necessarily situated on their actual headings.

Each field appears in the "Airfields" list.

In addition to the airfields on Oahu, I have placed a fictitious field on the south east corner of Kauai and another on the south east corner of Niihau. Note that the field on Niihau does not include a runway; it is simply an open, grassy area. There are no other fields at this time.

Each field includes an NDB transmitter. Please refer to the included NDB reference for frequencies and locations.

For those who like to use modern navaids, several VORs have been placed. Please refer to the included VOR reference for details. In addition, the field at Hickam is equipped with an ILS. The ILS reference provides the relevant details.

At this time, only Oahu, Kauai and Niihau have navaids.

For those who like to fly at night, Oahu is equipped with several Lighthouses. I placed these where I wanted to, without reference to any actual structures.

Additional Information

The following islands,

  • Oahu
  • Kauai
  • Niihau
  • Kaula

are complete, meaning that I'm happy with the way they look. This scenery uses the default Cfs terrain textures which are not necessarily the best for laying out islands like these. The coastlines are APPROXIMATE and are placed as best I can given the default textures. In spite of the approximation, the general shape of the islands is more or less correct.

Elevations are from GTOPO30 data, but the elevations for areas immediately surrounding the various airfields have been "leveled" in order to accommodate the runway object, which requires a flat surface.

The remaining islands have not been "detailed"; the coastlines, though placed as appropriately as I can, are "repetitious" because they use only a single class of texture files. As time permits, I will revisit these islands, detailing them and adding both airfields and navaids.
